The typical duration is 3 to 5 years. Candidates must be enrolled at least two semesters (one academic year) before they can submit their dissertation.
Public university
- Self-funded PhD – you must provide both tuition and your own maintenance
- PhD Fully or partially externally funded, with a stipend, through private or public foundations, scholarships, grants, one or more companies, or public institutions that you have to find on your own
Fees: No tuition fees are charged for doctoral studies but doctoral students have to pay a semester contribution
Funding resources: PhD students must secure their own funding through external scholarships, grants, or sponsorships.

- Dissertation: it can be a monograph or a cumulative dissertation (collection of articles) in German or English. A summary in both German and English is required.
- Disputation (public): 90 to 120 minutes in total, max. 45 for the presentation of the candidate
The disputation has to take place during the semester. The final grade is assigned immediately after the defense.
The dissertation must be published within two years after the defense. Failure to publish within the deadline results in the degree being revoked.
Acceptable publication formats:
- Electronic publication (must be approved by the EUF library)
- Four printed copies (if published in a scientific journal or commercial publisher)
Applications for doctoral studies involve the following steps:
1. Find a Supervisor: candidates must first secure a professor at EUF who agrees to supervise their dissertation.
2. Submit an Application, which must include:
- Research proposal (Exposé)
- Certified academic transcripts (Master’s degree or equivalent)
- CV
- Supervision agreement signed by the professor
- Statement on any previous PhD attempts
Applications can be sent in print or as a scanned PDF to the university’s doctoral administration.
- Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in a related field (with a minimum grade of “good”).
- Enrollment as a doctoral student at EUF for at least two semesters before submission.
- Sufficient knowledge in the chosen research area.
- International students must have their qualifications recognized as equivalent to German standards.

Languages used within the program and for thesis writing and discussion: German (primary language), English (possible with approval). The dissertation summary must be in both German and English.
PhD with only theoretical outcomes – no artistic projects/concerts/exhibitions as part of the final project
