The duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of three years, full-time, from the admission of the doctoral candidate to the Programme until the submission of the doctoral thesis. If, after the aforementioned three-year period, the application for deposit of the thesis has not been submitted, the committee responsible for the Programme may authorise the extension of this period for one more year, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year, under the conditions established in the corresponding Doctoral Programme.
Doctoral studies may be undertaken on a part-time basis for duly justified reasons. The part-time nature of these studies must be authorised by the Academic Committee responsible for the Programme and may have a maximum duration of five years from admission to the Programme until the presentation of the doctoral thesis. In these cases, the extension may be authorised for two more years, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year.

It is important to know that many universities offer different funding options and public and private grants available to students who match the application criteria. Before applying, it is a good idea to check the institutions’ websites and inquire about the options available to you.
Many universities require applicants to pay fees such as matriculation or dissertation fees, even if they offer a fully funded programme with or without a stipend.

The Doctoral Thesis will consist of an original research work prepared by the doctoral candidate in any field of knowledge and constitutes the main core of the Research Plan . This work must enable the doctoral candidate to work independently in the field of R&D&I.
To ensure that the thesis complies with the ethical principles of research, several procedures have been established:
- It is mandatory for all theses to carry out an analysis of originality or coincidences using the Turnitin program – see procedure -. The program is available in the University’s virtual classroom and must be activated by the doctoral student’s Tutor or director. This report will be uploaded to the DATRES platform for approval by the thesis director and the Academic Committee in the respective reports they issue.
- Students admitted from the 2020-21 academic year onwards must request evaluation of the research project by a Research Ethics Committee if their research phase involves: i) the participation of human beings, ii) the use of biological or biographical material from human beings (such as data collection from a registry, or conducting surveys), iii) the use of animals (animal experimentation) or iv) the use of biological agents or genetically modified organisms ( see procedure ).
In addition to the traditional format, there is the possibility of presenting the doctoral thesis as a compendium of the doctoral candidate’s articles in prestigious publications. Included in this category are publications recognized for obtaining research grants (six-year grants) in the field in which the research is carried out. In each of the programs, the specific requirements (number of articles, type of journal, number and order of authors, etc.) for this type of presentation must be consulted. The thesis must include, in addition to the articles, a broad summary showing the argument line of the thesis, giving coherence to the research as a whole, as well as a chapter of conclusions.
The thesis may be developed and, where appropriate, defended, in addition to Spanish, in one of the languages commonly used for scientific communication in its field of knowledge. In this case, it will include a summary of the thesis in Spanish, containing, at least, the background, methodology and conclusions of the work carried out.

Student profile: Graduates or Licentiates in Philology, Hispanic Studies or similar qualifications, with a university master’s degree or equivalent in the field of language, linguistics, literature or theatre.
Access requirements
- In general, to access a doctoral programme it will be necessary to be in possession of official Spanish degrees of Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, and of a Master’s Degree, or equivalent, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in the combination of these two courses.
