PhD in History of Art and Musicology – Autonomous University of Barcelona

General access requirements
In general, to access an official doctoral program you must be in possession of official Spanish bachelor’s degrees, or equivalent, and a university master’s degree.

a) Be in possession of official Spanish university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in all of these courses and accredit level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.

THIS ITEM INCLUDES:

Spanish University Degree 240 ECTS + official master’s degree 60 ECTS 

Spanish University Diploma + Official Master’s Degree of 120 ECTS. 

Spanish Degree in Pharmacy, Medicine, Veterinary Science or Architecture. 

5-year Spanish degree, MECES 3 and 300 credits from the old ones (must meet the 3 requirements).

b) Be in possession of a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for its homologation, which accredits a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that this qualification entitles to access doctoral studies in the country of issue. This admission does not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous qualification held by the interested party or its recognition for purposes other than that of access to doctoral studies.

c) Be in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems outside the EHEA, without the need for its homologation, with prior verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish university Master’s degree and that entitles the country of issue of the degree to access doctoral studies. This admission does not imply, in any case, the homologation of the previous degree that the interested party is in possession of nor its recognition for purposes other than that of access to doctoral studies.

d) Be in possession of another Doctoral degree.

e) University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding entrance test for specialized healthcare training places, have successfully completed at least two years of training in a program to obtain the official degree in one of the specialties in Health Sciences, may also access it.

f) Have a degree in architecture or engineering without equivalence to ECTS credits, provided that they are in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies of Royal Decree 778/1998, of April 30, which regulates the third cycle of university studies, the obtaining and issuing of the doctoral degree and other postgraduate degrees, or have achieved research sufficiency in accordance with Royal Decree 185/1985, of January 23, which regulates the third cycle of university studies, the obtaining and issuing of the doctoral degree and other postgraduate studies.

Admission to the doctoral program is decided by the rector, and is conditional on passing the additional training requirements, if any.

Selection criteria

The merit assessment criteria in the selection process are the following:

• Academic record and affinity of studies with the area of ​​art history or musicology (30%).
• Obtaining research grants and scholarships (10%).
• Research experience (participation in conferences, publications, membership in research projects) (20%).
• Accreditation of B1 languages ​​in English, French and Italian (20%).
• Academic stays abroad (10%).
• Personal interview (10%).

Level B1 : The student is able to understand the main points of clear, standard texts on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, study or leisure; when he/she knows how to deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in areas where the language is used; when he/she is able to produce simple, coherent texts on topics that are familiar to him/her or in which he/she has a personal interest, and when he/she can describe experiences, events, wishes and aspirations, as well as briefly justify his/her opinions or explain his/her plans.

Training supplements

In the event that this doctoral program detects a deficiency in the candidates’ training related to art history or musicology, up to 30 credits of specific training supplements may be required, at the decision of the doctoral program’s academic committee. These credits serve to supplement training deficits in the areas of art history and musicology, or initiation to research.
These credits are grouped as follows:

• In 2 subjects for the candidate whose thesis topic is in the field of musicology. In this case the subjects are the following:
  • Research methodology in music sciences and interpretative application of research (15 ECTS credits).
  • Introduction to research and master’s thesis (15 ECTS credits)

Both belong to the official master’s degree in Musicology, Music Education and Early Music Interpretation at the UAB.

• In 3 subjects for the candidate whose thesis topic is in the field of art history. In this case the subjects are the following:
  • Artistic heritage: Study paths and analysis techniques (12 credits).
  • Art, history and thought (9 credits).
  • Master’s thesis (9 credits).

All three belong to the official master’s degree in Analysis and Management of Artistic Heritage from the UAB.
