The duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of three years, full-time, from the admission of the doctoral candidate to the Programme until the submission of the doctoral thesis. If, after the aforementioned three-year period, the application for deposit of the thesis has not been submitted, the committee responsible for the Programme may authorise the extension of this period for one more year, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year, under the conditions established in the corresponding Doctoral Programme.
Doctoral studies may be undertaken on a part-time basis for duly justified reasons. The part-time nature of these studies must be authorised by the Academic Committee responsible for the Programme and may have a maximum duration of five years from admission to the Programme until the presentation of the doctoral thesis. In these cases, the extension may be authorised for two more years, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year.

The doctoral thesis will consist of an original research work carried out by the candidate in any field of study. The thesis must enable the doctoral candidate to work independently in the field of R&D&i.
R&D&i” stands for Research, Development, and Innovation. It specifies that the thesis should contribute to these areas.
The doctoral thesis will be evaluated in a public defense session, where the doctoral candidate will present and defend their research work before the members of the tribunal. The doctors present at the public event may ask questions at the time and in the manner indicated by the president of the tribunal.
Recommended entry profile
Candidates for this PhD in Cultural Heritage and Digitalisation must have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or related fields.
In addition, they must have completed a research-oriented university master’s degree (at least 60 ECTS credits) at any higher education institution in the EHEA (European Higher Education Area), or in a third country, provided that said master’s degree enables access to doctoral studies in the country of issue.
Preferably, but not exclusively, the master’s degrees related to topics in the areas of Heritage, Advanced Studies in Humanities, Philology, Digitalization and Technological Transition of Society that give access to the Program. As a guide, the following are taught by the UCAV: Master’s Degree in Protection, Research and Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Master’s Degree in Project Management, Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management (MBA); and those taught by the UCV: Master’s Degree in Technological Innovation in Education; Master’s Degree in Political Marketing and Institutional Communication; Master’s Degree in Administrative Management; Master’s Degree in Business Management in a Global Environment MBA.
In the case of candidates who have not completed a Master’s Degree, but who have begun doctoral studies in accordance with previous university regulations, they must be in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) or have achieved Research Sufficiency (SI), in accordance with what is indicated in the Second Additional Provision of RD 99/2011 of January 28.
Furthermore, it is advisable to have a good level of English, especially in reading, although it is also advisable to have good oral and written expression, since part of the bibliography and information handled in the Doctoral Programme may be in English (a B2 level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference will be highly valued). Likewise, it is advisable to have an interest in scientific production and teamwork since the development of the doctoral thesis may be carried out within the framework of a Research Group.
