This degree is awarded by the Faculty following the submission of a doctoral thesis.
The doctorate in art and art sciences comprises a practical component, consisting of an artistic creation or the restoration of one or more works, and a theoretical component, consisting of a written dissertation. These two components are closely interconnected, forming a cohesive whole, which is the subject of the final evaluation. In all cases, the practical and theoretical research aspects are conducted jointly, fostering an interaction between artistic practice and theoretical reflection. This dual nature of the doctorate in art and art sciences necessitates collaboration between universities and art schools (in Belgium and abroad) in supporting doctoral candidates in this field.
The doctorate in art and art sciences is open to students holding a Master’s degree in either Visual Arts, Music, Theatre and Spoken Word, or Performing Arts and Broadcasting and Communication Techniques, as well as to those holding an equivalent degree. The Doctoral Admissions Committee for Art and Art Sciences, appointed by the Faculty Jury, consults with the director of the Higher School of Arts to which each application relates and with the co-supervisor. The admission requirements are detailed in the Doctoral Program Regulations .

Joint supervision is mandatory due to the specific nature of the dissertation, which requires the supervision and guidance of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the work. Therefore, a university supervisor must be paired with a co-supervisor who teaches at an art school and commits to jointly supervising the dissertation.
