Final output

You’ll develop a thesis in parallel with practice-based research, and we’ll help you focus on appropriate developments of your practice for pursuing your as research and work with you to refine appropriate forms of discourse and dissemination. Alternatively, a PhD in Art can be wholly historical or theoretical, conforming to the conventions of traditional written theses. For some candidates, PhD research enables them to progress their career by establishing their research capabilities and credentials in an academic context. For others, the opportunity to examine practices in depth, to make a rigorous and original contribution to knowledge, can be an end in itself.

Your university application journey
Applications should be submitted at least 2 months before the course start date, as it can take between 4-6 weeks to complete the application journey.
If you are an international applicant and need a Student Route visa, you’ll need to apply at least 8 weeks before your CAS deadline.

1. Develop your research proposal
Before you apply, it is helpful if you have already identified how your proposed research links to areas of specialism and expertise within the relevant School.

2. Check the entry requirements

4. Apply online
Our research degrees can be applied for directly to the University using the ‘Apply now’ link on the relevant course page.
Please ensure that you meet the entry requirements for the programme and submit all documentation to avoid delays in processing your application.

5. Wait to hear from us
Our admissions team will be in touch once we have received your application. We aim to respond to your application within 6-8 weeks. We’ll be in touch if we need anything further.
Your application will be sent to the School Postgraduate Research Lead for review of your proposal.
If there is interest from supervisors within the research group, we will then invite you to interview.

6. Accepting a place
If your application is successful, we will offer you a place which you can accept via the UoG applicant portal (see your offer letter for details).
To accept your offer of a place at UoG, you must agree to the Student Contract.

7. Visit us
