Final output

Dissertation:

A primarily theoretical-scientific thesis, may optionally include an artistic component.
Collaborative projects are allowed, but your own contribution must be clearly identified.

Disputation (Defense):

A public or faculty-wide oral defense.
It consists of a presentation and a discussion about the dissertation’s theoretical (and possibly artistic) significance for research.

Publication: after passing the defense, the dissertation must be published (print/digital) as required by the HFBK regulations

How to apply

1. Check Deadlines: typically, the application cycle for doctoral admission closes in late September.

2. Application Submission:

A research proposal (up to ~10 pages) describing your theoretical focus, aims, methods, potential artistic elements (if applicable).
Degree certificates (Master’s, Diplom, etc.) with at least “good” (2.3 or better grade) or recognized foreign equivalent.
CV (Curriculum vitae).
Confirmation from the chosen HFBK supervisor(s). (typically a professor in the Theory/History department)
Any portfolio/publications demonstrating your prior scholarly/artistic work.
A statement indicating whether you’ve attempted a doctorate elsewhere.

3. Admission Review:

Once accepted, you must enroll (Immatrikulation) as a doctoral student at HFBK

Entry requirements

• Academic Degree:

A recognized Master’s or equivalent (e.g., Diplom) in a relevant art/design field, typically with a final grade of “good” or above.
Foreign degrees require an equivalence check.

For the Dr. phil. in art, your prior education should show sufficient theoretical/scientific qualifications (or you must complete bridging coursework as assigned).
