Standard duration: 3 to 4 years.
Max duration: 5 years (extensions possible)

- Self-funded PhD – you must provide both tuition and your own maintenance
- PhD Fully or partially externally funded, with a stipend, through private or public foundations, scholarships, grants, one or more companies, or public institutions that you have to find on your own
Fees: No tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution (amount varies)

Dissertation:
- in German or English (other languages require approval)
- a summary in both German and English is required
- cumulative dissertations may be allowed
Disputation: 30 minutes presentation (minimum) + discussion session (60-90 minutes in total)
The final grade is assigned immediately after the defense.
The dissertation must be published within two years after the defense. Acceptable publication formats are:
- Electronic version (approved by the university library).
- Printed copies for the university library.
- Commercial publication (minimum 150 copies).
Candidates must first secure a professor in Musicology, Cultural Management, or Music Pedagogy to supervise their research. After that they can submit an application to the doctoral committee of Faculty III.

- Research proposal (Exposé)
- Master’s degree transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Supervision agreement signed by a faculty member
- Statement on any previous PhD attempts
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (minimum grade: “good”).
- Enrollment as a doctoral student for at least two semesters before submitting the dissertation.
Language proficiency:
- Musicology: Requires Latin knowledge or an equivalent classical language.
- Cultural Management & Popular Music History: Requires two modern foreign languages (B1 level or higher).
- Music Pedagogy: Requires English at B2 level.
International students must have their qualifications recognized by German standards.

Languages used within the program and for thesis writing and discussion: German (English or other languages possible with approval), other languages depending on the field and theme of the studies.
PhD with only theoretical outcomes – no artistic projects/concerts/exhibitions as part of the final project.
