Final output

As a doctoral student, you acquire knowledge and competences precisely by conducting scientific research that will result in your doctoral thesis. The doctoral thesis is your original contribution to science, on the basis of which your competence for independent, original and scientifically or artistically important research is assessed. By defending your doctoral thesis, you acquire the academic degree of Doctor of Science or Doctor of Arts.

How to apply

To enroll in a doctoral study, the first step you must take is to apply for a competition announced by a particular faculty or academy (this competition is announced at least one month before the start of classes). The competition prescribes the conditions for enrollment in a particular doctoral study. Applicants are required to have a certain success rate in their graduate studies, recommendations from university teachers and a potential mentor, and the admissions process also includes an interview about their planned research work. The results of the enrollment are publicly announced – they are available on the study website. If the scientific area and field of the doctoral study differ from the area and field in which you graduated, you may be required to attend different courses to acquire the basic knowledge necessary to attend and complete the study.

The competition for the admission of new candidates is announced every year in September. It is very important that the candidate, when applying for the study and choosing the field/topic, speaks with a potential mentor before applying for the competition, in order to avoid possible misunderstandings that may arise from the workload of an individual mentor.
