The duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of three years, full-time, from the admission of the doctoral candidate to the Programme until the submission of the doctoral thesis. If, after the aforementioned three-year period, the application for deposit of the thesis has not been submitted, the committee responsible for the Programme may authorise the extension of this period for one more year, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year, under the conditions established in the corresponding Doctoral Programme.
Doctoral studies may be undertaken on a part-time basis for duly justified reasons. The part-time nature of these studies must be authorised by the Academic Committee responsible for the Programme and may have a maximum duration of five years from admission to the Programme until the presentation of the doctoral thesis. In these cases, the extension may be authorised for two more years, which may exceptionally be extended for another additional year.

In Spain, to have a predoctoral contract you must already be enrolled in a doctoral program
It is important to know that many universities offer different funding options and public and private grants available to students who match the application criteria. Before applying, it is a good idea to check the institutions’ websites and inquire about the options available to you.
Many universities require applicants to pay fees such as matriculation or dissertation fees, even if they offer a fully funded programme with or without a stipend.

According to article 18 on the doctoral thesis of the regulations of the Regulations governing official doctoral studies and the title of doctor from the University of Granada :
- The doctoral thesis will consist of an original research work prepared by the candidate in any field of knowledge, which will be framed within one of the research lines of the Doctoral Program in which he/she is enrolled.
- The thesis must enable the doctoral candidate to work independently in the field of R&D&I.
- The thesis must have, at least, the following contents: title, abstract, introduction, objectives, methodology, results, conclusions and bibliography.
For the formal presentation of the Thesis it will be necessary:
- a) Favorable report from the Thesis Director, authorizing its presentation.
- b) Favorable report from the student’s Tutor.
- c) Authorization of the defense and Proposal of the Tribunal by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in which the Thesis has been completed.
- d) Guarantee of the quality of the work carried out:
- At least one publication associated with the thesis, accepted or published in a journal with impact in the field of knowledge of the doctoral thesis signed by the doctoral student, as established by each of the programs (see instructions below). The thesis report must include the results published in the associated articles or publications.
- Each publication may only be associated with one Doctoral Thesis.
The provisions of the Regulations governing official Doctoral studies and the title of Doctor from the University of Granada, approved by the Governing Council of the University of Granada at its meeting on 2 May 2012, must be complied with. Article 22.3 and Transitional Provisions 1 and 2. Point 3 of article 22 states: “In order to guarantee, prior to its formal presentation, the quality of the work developed, at least one publication accepted or published in a medium of impact in the field of knowledge of the doctoral thesis signed by the doctoral student, which includes part of the results of the thesis, must be provided.” - The impact factor of the journal or publication must be accredited.
- The publication must be included as an additional document to be submitted to the International Graduate School and not included in the copy of the thesis.
The Doctoral Program in ‘Arts and Education’ considers that the minimum requirement for the defense of the thesis would be:
- At least one book or book chapter from an internationally renowned publisher that appears in the Scholarly Publishers Indicators (SPI) prepared by the EPUC Group of the CSIC or included in reference databases (for example Francis, Anthropological Literature, etc., or
- At least one item from group A or
- At least 2 articles from group B or two chapters from national publishers or a combination of both (1 and 1)
- At least one creative work of an artistic nature, curated exhibitions, awards and mentions, with wide public recognition.
The thesis may be written and, where appropriate, defended in the languages commonly used for scientific communication in the student’s field of knowledge. If the thesis is written in another language, it must include a comprehensive summary in Spanish.

Access routes to the research period of the Doctoral Program
To access the Doctoral Programme during its research period, it will be necessary to be in possession of an official Master’s degree, or another degree of the same level issued by a higher education institution in the European Higher Education Area.
In addition, those who hold a degree obtained in accordance with educational systems outside the European Higher Education Area may access the programme, without the need for its homologation, after verifying that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master’s degree and that it qualifies the applicant for access to doctoral studies in the country that issued the degree.
This admission will not, under any circumstances, imply the approval of the previous qualification held by the interested party, nor its recognition for any purpose other than that of pursuing doctoral studies.
Likewise, access may be obtained by fulfilling any of the following conditions:
- Having completed 60 credits included in one or more Master’s Degrees in accordance with the offer of the University of Granada . Exceptionally, students who have completed 60 postgraduate credits that have been configured, in accordance with the regulations of this University, by training activities not included in Master’s Degrees and who have a favorable report from the evaluating agency, in accordance with the provisions of article 24 of RD 1393/2007, may access the research period.
- Possession of a Graduate degree whose duration, in accordance with community law, is at least 300 credits.
- Be in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies, obtained in accordance with the provisions of RD 778/1998, of April 30, or have achieved the Research Sufficiency regulated in RD 185/1985, of January 23.
Criteria for admission to the research period
In order to be admitted to the research period of the Doctoral Program, candidate students must submit an application that will be evaluated by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program. Among the criteria for admission and selection of doctoral students, the following will be expressly taken into account:
- The applicant’s prior training, especially the skills acquired during the postgraduate training period. Preferential consideration will be given to students who have completed one of the Master’s degrees that make up the training period of this Doctoral Programme.
- Your curriculum vitae. Among other things, your proven level of language proficiency, professional experience, publications, and reference letters from professors and researchers specializing in the subject that support your application will be valuable merits.
- The research interests declared by the applicant.
- Your commitment to dedication to the Program.
- Feasibility and scientific interest of the thesis project presented, if applicable.
- Result of a personal interview, if applicable.
- In those applicants who are found to have “specific training deficiencies”, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme may require the completion of specific training supplements. These training supplements will be mandatory for those students whose access to the training period is guaranteed by holding an official Spanish Graduate degree of at least 300 credits, unless the study plan of the corresponding degree includes research training credits, equivalent in training value to the research credits from Master’s studies.
