Final output

A PhD thesis may be either article-based or written as a monograph. An article-based PhD thesis would normally consist of 3 to 4 articles and a kappa; however, the number of articles can vary depending on the field of research. The choice of the type of PhD thesis should be discussed by the PhD student and the principal supervisor.

If the thesis is written as a monograph, it should include the following elements:
– Summaries in Danish and English
– Stated and clear research objectives
– Description of the research project in the context of the international state-of-the-art within the specific subject area
– Discussion of results achieved (including material, methods, and results)
– Analysis of results – including a comparison between the PhD student’s own findings and other results, such that the PhD student’s work is seen in the context of the relevant on-going work in the specific area investigated
– Conclusions and perspectives for further research
– Citations and references

If the PhD thesis is article-based, it should include the following elements:
– Summaries in Danish and English
– Stated and clear research objectives
– Description of the research project in the context of the international state-of-the-art within the specific subject area
– Summary of the results in the papers and their relation to the international state-of-the-art
– A critical discussion of the work of other researchers in the field, as well as a comparison between their own findings, such that the PhD student’s work is seen in the context of the relevant on-going work in the specific area studied

How to apply

How to apply for a PhD at the IT University of Copenhagen
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) offers PhD positions within various research fields throughout the year. If you wish to be a PhD student at ITU, you can apply for a PhD position.
All announced PhD positions are fully funded and announced on an ongoing basis on ITU’s website for vacant positions. Please check the respective calls for the deadline of applying for each PhD position.
Every year ITU has an annual open PhD call, where applicants can submit their own project proposal. The annual PhD call is announced every year in late January also on ITU’s website for vacancies.

Selection Process and Timeline
HR reviews all the applications and schedules the selection process accordingly. The final decision will be made within 3-4 months after the deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.

Entry requirements

Academic qualifications
Admission to the PhD programme is based on qualifications equivalent to a Danish two-year master’s degree of 120 ECTS points. Corresponding qualifications, including especially foreign study programmes, may be assessed to be equivalent to the specified requirements. If the degree is obtained from a foreign university and if you are uncertain that it is equivalent to a Danish qualifying degree, you can use the link below to the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science’s database to check:

English language skills
The minimum requirement for enrolment as a PhD student is English at Danish level B (gymnasium level). Normally, a university-issued MSc degree provides for the necessary English skills needed to attend and to teach courses in English, as well as reading and writing academic and technical English.
